BD is a manic-depressive disorder with a complex chronic psychiatric illness characterized by a mixed episode, which can be disabling with significant morbidity and mortality. The illness has its onset in adolescence and late childhood in some individuals. Signs and symptoms of subtypes of bipolar 1 and bipolar 11 features may include anxious distress, melancholy, and psychosis, but vary from individuals.
Bipolar disorder symptoms are classified as either manic/hypomanic or depressive. A manic episode is a period of at least one week when a person is extremely spirited or irritable most of the day for most days, possesses more energy than usual, and experiences at least three of the following changes in behavior:
Cyclothymic disorder is a milder form of bipolar disorder involving many "mood swings," with hypomania and depressive symptoms that occur frequently. People with cyclothymia experience emotional ups and downs but with less severe symptoms than bipolar I or II disorder.
Decreased need for sleep (e.g., feeling energetic despite significantly less sleep than usual.
Increased or faster speech.
Uncontrollable racing thoughts or quickly changing ideas or topics when speaking.
Distractibility.
Increased activity (e.g., restlessness, working on several projects at once).
Increased risky or impulsive behavior (e.g., reckless driving, spending sprees, sexual promiscuity).
Feelings of Sadness
Hopelessness, and worthlessness
Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities
Weight changes
Changes to sleep habits — either oversleeping or insomnia,
Fatigue, indecisiveness, and suicidal thoughts.
